Shortly before Christmas Day, I received a call on my mobile phone from a source that did no reveal the number. A deep but courteous voice greeted me in Swahili: "Jambo?" to which I naturally answered. He went on: "I am Mwai Kibaki. ..." After a few minutes, he concluded, "May God bless you".

Indeed, it was the President asking for my vote personally and before I realised that it was a recorded political campaign message, the thought of the Head of State calling me was quite perplexing. Does he know me? Who gave him my number?

Reuters: African nations urged to harmonize telecoms laws

African countries working jointly to construct an undersea telecoms cable should harmonize laws governing the sector if they are to land the much-awaited communications link, a senior U.N. official said on Monday.

For those of us who live in the comforts of urban India, modern technology may be a way of life. But now, the benefits of high-speed internet and telecom are also reaching the people who may need them the most.

In a pioneering initiative, telecom major Ericsson along with its partners has launched the 'Gramjyoti Rural Broadband Project' in the village of Vadugambadi in Tamil Nadu, 60 kms from Chennai.

The pilot project seeks to introduce the benefits of WCDMA/HSPA technology in rural India and connect communities to high-speed internet services.

First annual report of the Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies and Development

The Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies and Development (GAID) is an inclusive, cross-sectoral, multi-stakeholder platform promoting the use of information and communication technologies for enhancing the achievement of the internationally agreed development goals, notably the reduction of poverty. It was created by the Secretary-General of the United Nations on 28 March 2006, and recognized by the Economic and Social Council in decision 2006/251. The Alliance was launched in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 19 June 2006.

Global Alliance Launches Website, Blog For Geneva Youth Forum

The United Nations Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for Development today launched the website of the Forum on Youth and ICT for Development, to be held on 24-26 September in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Youth Forum aims to involve young people in discussions with policymakers, thought leaders and representatives from the private sector and civil society, and to explore ways to empower them and encourage their full participation in society through the use of information and communications technology.

A new Challenge Award 2007 in cooperation with Global Knowledge Partnership

The Stockholm Challenge GKP Awards 2007 is a new joint initiative with the multi stakeholder networking organisation Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP). The awards will be presented at the Global Knowledge III event in Kuala Lumpur in December 2007.

The new prize is an integral part of the Stockholm Challenge 2008 and is open in four of the six Stockholm Challenge categories: Culture, Economic Development, Education and Public Administration. It focuses on the role of multi stakeholder partnerships in ICT for development.

Informal Summary of the Second GAID Strategy Council Meeting

The Second meeting of the Strategy Council of the Global Alliance for ICT and Development (GAID) was held on 27 February 2007 at Intel Headquarters in Santa Clara, California. Approximately 130 members of the Strategy Council and the Panel of High-level Advisers attended the meeting.
