Mayors Seeking Technological Fixes For Development, Environmental Challenges To Meet At United Nations Headquarters, 23-24 April

Mayors and representatives from the world’s swelling cities will meet at United Nations Headquarters in New York on 23 and 24 April to consider how innovative technologies can meet the environmental challenges posed by the rapid growth of urban areas.

With urban regions experiencing rapid population growth -— 2008 will mark the first time in human history that more than half of the world’s population will be living in cities -- mayors are looking for practical solutions to improve living conditions and confront climate change while preventing inequity and exclusion.

UN appoints new members to the global alliance on ICT

United Nations, 09 APRIL –The United Nations announced today the appointment of new members to the Global Alliance for Information and Communications Technology and Development (GAID).

The new members replace the members of the GAID Steering Committee and Strategy Council hosted by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. The new members will carry on the strategic work towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals through ICT policies as laid out by the outgoing members.

'Connect Africa' Summit Ends With Pledge To Link Continent's Capitals, Major Cities By 2012; Total Global Hook-up To Follow

The "Connect Africa" summit concluded today in Kigali with commitments to create the right regulatory environment from African leaders and pledges by private-sector leaders to invest in the continent's communications sector.

Some 1,000 participants -- including six African Presidents, executives of information and communications technology (ICT) companies and heads of international development banks -- convened in the Rwandan capital to devise ways to improve Africa's information and communications technology infrastructure, especially in relation to Internet broadband connectivity.

At United Nations Forum In Geneva, Young People Call For Involvement In Information Technology

Young people attending a United Nations-backed summit in Geneva have asked to be involved in initiatives that utilize information and communications technology (ICT) to tackle global challenges.
"Many youth organizations", said Sarbuland Khan, Executive Director of the Global Alliance for ICT and Development, "have come forward to tell us that they want to remain engaged in creating youth centres of excellence and global youth networks that place ICT in the service of development."

Press Conference to Announce 'Connect Africa' Initiative

"Connect Africa", a major initiative to provide high-speed, low-cost broadband and wireless connectivity to all parts of the continent, was announced at Headquarters this morning.

Making the announcement at a press conference were Hamadoun Touré, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union; Craig Barrett, Chairman of the Global Alliance for ICT and Development (GAID), and CEO of Intel Corporation; Walter Fust, Director-General of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation; and Mohsen Khalil, Director of Global ICT at the World Bank Group.

Young people, who are the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable users of information and communication technology (ICT), will engage in discussions with their peers and with leaders from Government, the private sector, civil society and the technology community at an event to be held in Geneva from 24 to 26 September.
