He walks into a consulting room at Black Lion Hospital in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa and greets a doctor at the Care Hospital in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad.

Linked by a high-speed Internet connection, the doctors study X-rays and laboratory results.

Business Week: Rural folk to tap e-medicine

Rural health care providers may soon get diagnostic solutions from the Internet for patients whose situations prove complex to treat. This is expected to be achieved through the tele-medicine technology that provides medical information for diagnosis.
The tool, an online medical reference called Map of Medicine contains information for diagnosis of various diseases. It will act as a consultancy tool for health providers who can not get the right diagnosis for a patient in the rural or urban areas in Kenya.

Balancing Act: Mobile service helps bring down infant mortality in Mali

In Coura, a district of Mali's capital Bamako, it's now possible to monitor the health of local infants closely in real time with the launch of a new pilot project dubbed Pesinet. Initiated and funded by Alcatel-Lucent, Fondation Orange Mali, Afrique Initiatives, Medicament Export (Medex) and Kafo Yeredeme, the project aims to provide a preventative medical diagnostic service for infants between 0-5 years, based on regular checks on the childrens' weight gain.

Annan said by participating in the UN's new Global Alliance for ICT and Development, they helped to give important direction to the UN's drive for an open and prosperous information society.
