Economic Times: Govt plans to subsidise internet for rural India

Worried over missing the broadband addition target, the government is now planning to give subsidy for new broadband connection in the rural parts of the country. The subsidy would be up to 50% of the total cost of setting the system by service providers. Also, running cost of internet in rural areas would be about half of those in the cities. These steps are being taken in a move to strengthen the egovernance network as the government has miserably failed on this front.

What are the implications for policy and practice of the integration of ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) in local governance systems in Africa? What are the key drivers for the effective integration of ICTs? Using case studies from Senegal, Ghana, Uganda and South Africa this International Development Research Centre (IDRC) book analyses these issues. It finds that there is potential for growth by integrating ICTs in local governance, although building capacity is a key aspect of that potential.
