EurActiv: EU acts to remove Web barriers for disabled

The hurdles faced by disabled citizens every day are not just infrastructure-related. Despite the disabled being the most frequent users of media, just 5% of websites in Europe are accessible to the blind and an even smaller proportion of TV programmes are deaf-friendly.

The Commission is currently studying new measures to establish industrial standards which should pave the way to easier access to new technologies with high potential spin-offs. The measures are being introduced in the face of what some describe as a "failure of the market" to guarantee accessibility.

cross-browser compatibility

I also notice the extent to which cross-browser compatibility is ignored by European websites. As a long time Mac user this exclusion is as frustrating as the lack of access for the disabled.

RE: ICT barriers for PWDs need to have a universal approach

Its good that this years theme for the World Telecommunication/Information Society Day 2008 focuses on persons with diability. This group of people the world over have problems as far as ICTs are concerned so the UN, EU, the Commonwealth and the AU have to start in having friendly policies for these people.

ICTs will enhence remain a mythical thing for them if universal access, usage, affordability and programming are not addressed.
