Climate Action: EU to promote use of ICT in energy conservation

The European Commission announced Tuesday that it would promote the use of information and communications technologies (ICT) to improve energy efficiency throughout the economy, starting with buildings, lighting and the power grid. “To meet Europe’s energy efficiency goals by 2020, we need a high-growth, low-carbon economy. Research and rapid take-up of innovative energy efficient ICT solutions will be crucial to lowering emissions across the whole economy,” said Viviane Reding, European Union (EU) commissioner for information society and media.

BBC News: Europe votes on anti-piracy laws

Europeans suspected of putting movies and music on file-sharing networks could be thrown off the web under proposals before Brussels.

The powers are in a raft of laws that aim to harmonise the regulations governing Europe's telecom markets.

Other amendments added to the packet of laws allow governments to decide which software can be used on the web.

Campaigners say the laws trample on personal privacy and turn net suppliers into copyright enforcers.

The Federal Foreign Office, as the Focal Point Europe in the Global Alliance network, wants to contribute via this digital library.

FT: BBC backs better broadband to prevent digital divide

The BBC is throwing its weight behind Ofcom, the communications watchdog, in pushing for a faster broadband network to be built across Britain.

Ashley Highfield, the BBC's director for future media and technology, said he was concerned that without a next-generation network, Britain would face a "digital divide" between people with fast access to the internet and those without.

The Global Alliance functions as a partnership and network supported by the United Nations, under the authority of the Secretary-General and the auspices of the Economic and Social Council. GAID is a global network with regional and sub-regional sections.

The Focal Point Europe, coordinated by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Director Schon, met on 16 January in Dresden to reflect on the role that Europe should play.

The German Foreign Office invited European organizations, companies and individuals that are interested in actively participating in the Global Alliance for ICT and Development to a Focal Point Europe meeting.

Chaired by Mr. Karl-Georg Schon, the meeting will take place in the office of AMD in Dresden, Germany on 16th January 2007. About 40 participants from governments, companies and NGOs are expected to join.
