Diario Co Latino: América Latina y el Caribe esperan reducir brecha digital al 2010

La firma de la declaración de compromisos San Salvador, al cierre de la “II conferencia ministerial sobre la Sociedad de la Información”, es el compromiso de América Latina y el Caribe para reducir la brecha digital al 2010.

Los representantes de más de 26 naciones del continente, en los últimos tres días, analizaron en esta capital los factores que imposibilitan la utilización de las nuevas Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación (TIC), por los países en vías de desarrollo.

Strategy Council and Steering Committee Meeting, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 18 – 20 May, 2008

The UN DESA GAID Annual Meeting will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 18 – 20 May, 2008.

The meeting aims to bring together partners to help implement a number of ICT projects of significant, catalyzing impact on the development of ICT infrastructure, services and applications. This year’s Annual Meeting will focus on issues of Access and Connectivity, particularly for the Asian and Island States as well as Innovative Funding Mechanism for the implementation of the ICT infrastructure, services and applications.

About the GAID LAC Network

The UN DESA GAID LAC Network will be the Latin American and Caribbean focal point for the Global Alliance for ICT and Development. The Network will take stock of the current situation in the ICT for Development field in the Region, establish links among stakeholders, help them to coordinate and meet, and identify key areas in order to create an action-oriented agenda. Our objective is to bring together people and organizations from throughout the Region to promote intra and inter-regional collaboration among interested stakeholders.

Mission

The mission of the Global Alliance is to promote ICTs as a tool for development as stated in the Millennium Development Goals (#8) and the World Summit on the Information Society (Tunis Agenda). The GAID-LAC site furthers that goal in Latin America and the Caribbean within the framework set out by the Seminar in San Salvador and the eLAC Plan of Action

The Network will rely on participants who will:

  • Demonstrate leadership in ICT4Development issues
  • Share best practices and knowledge
  • Engage in policy dialogues
  • Share innovative business models for economic growth and empowerment of people

African Network of the Global Alliance for ICT and Development (GAID) launched

More than fifty representatives from African Governments, Civil Society Organizations, Private sector actors, Academia and International Organizations took part in the launch and first meeting of the African Regional Network of the UN Global Alliance for ICTs and Development (GAID) on Friday 23rd March 2007.

Jointly hosted by the Conference of NGOs (CONGO) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and supported by the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, the first meeting of the African Regional Network will take place on the 23rd March 2007 at the UNECA Conference Center in Addis Ababa, in conjunction with the African civil Society Forum.

Union Network International: GAID Focal Point Europe Meeting

The Global Alliance functions as a partnership and network supported by the United Nations, under the authority of the Secretary-General and the auspices of the Economic and Social Council. GAID is a global network with regional and sub-regional sections.

The Focal Point Europe, coordinated by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Director Schon, met on 16 January in Dresden to reflect on the role that Europe should play.

The German Foreign Office invited European organizations, companies and individuals that are interested in actively participating in the Global Alliance for ICT and Development to a Focal Point Europe meeting.

Chaired by Mr. Karl-Georg Schon, the meeting will take place in the office of AMD in Dresden, Germany on 16th January 2007. About 40 participants from governments, companies and NGOs are expected to join.
