Behind the Scenes at UN Meets Silicon Valley

Barrett's opening remarks were refreshing. He spoke without notes, clearly excited about the potential of Silicon Valley to push the ICT4D agenda forward. The UNGAID hopes to catalyze economic growth, and for Barrett, it all comes down to a simple question: "Where are the next billion users coming from?" His answer: emerging markets.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) took its campaign to Silicon Valley, California with the aim of cementing ties with the private sector and promoting the use of state-of-the-art in ICT to bridge the digital divide across the world.

A statement from the ITU, a United Nations body, said its Secretary-General, Hamadoun I. Touré conferred with some of the leading lights of Silicon Valley at a meeting in Mountain View, California.

FT: UN warning to Silicon Valley over digital rift

Silicon Valley has been slow to develop technology and business approaches specifically suited to customers in the emerging world, according to representatives at a UN-sponsored gathering in the US technology heartland this week.

As a result, it risks missing out on one of the next big potential markets for its products, while also leaving a widening "digital divide" that is seeing the growing ranks of broadband users in the developed world leap even further ahead.
