Side Events Minimize

In the framework of the Annual Meeting of the Global Alliance for ICT and Development (GAID), parallel sessions will take place on the 4th September from 2:00 to 6:00 pm. These sessions are a platform for dialogue for flagship partnership initiatives, regional and stakeholder networks, communities of expertise, and partners of the Global Alliance .

The format of the meeting is expected to be defined by the organizers; it can be a workshop, panel discussion, brainstorming session etc. The parallel sessions will take place at the Global Forum venue, Parque Fundidora. All Global Forum participants are invited to attend and contribute to the parallel sessions.

On TAG Knowledge Society – A model for the Arab region
Organized by: Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization

Inspired by Mr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, TAG Knowledge Society (TAG KS) is a knowledge/ information model implemented in communities and universities in the Arab countries. The objective is to provide parity of opportunity for all segments of Arab societies and create professional environments for entrepreneurs and creative innovators. Under TAG KS, the workshop will address IP Education as a driver for innovation, TAG PEDIA (Arabic Wiki), 500/12 related TAG Computer Refurbishment, TAG Knowledge Windows in Palestine, UN GAID – CoE ICTs in Education: The Arab region context, and an emerging business concept: “ICT, Innovation, and Development”.

Information Security and Its Impact on Innovation and Growth for the Developing World

The session will be a platform for the discussion of the evolving dynamics of information security as they apply to developing economies, in the context of global citizenship, privacy, communication and education. It will also propose models for the use of new paradigms of information security to meet the unique needs of developing economies.

Introduction to Constructive Entrepreneurship
Organized by: ATHGO

The interactive session will introduce the concept of Constructive Entrepreneurship as an effective tool in meeting the UN MDGS, particularly eradication of poverty, while highlighting the model's prime difference from commercial and social entrepreneurship. The discussion will also exhibit the significance of young people's engagement in the process.

ICT in Education strategies and policies in Latin America and Caribbean region

The session will discuss the specific situation of ICTs in Education in Latin America and Caribbean region, especially the strategies and policies in this domain as well as specific needs of policy makers in the region. The round table discussion will be in Spanish.

Involving young people in Innovative Educational ICT Initiatives

The aim of the workshop is to facilitate exchange around concrete ICT initiatives presented by young people from around the world. These will be the basis for discussion and exchange to identify ingredients needed for best practices and project creation around ICT4D.

  • ICT and Innovation in Education – A profile of the DOT TeachUp! program

    The session would be a both presentation and interactive discussion. The presentation component will cover an overview of the TeachUp! program and details of impact and success to date – including Lessons Learned. The presentation will be followed by an interactive question period covering DOT’s global involvement in ICT and Innovation in Education – and in particular the role that young people play as Facilitators of integrating ICT into learning at the school site and as direct support to Teachers. The session will be led by DOT Interns – talented young leaders who have been contributing to integrating ICT into Education. At the session we will also be profiling our DOT Mexico Education Initiative – which is being launched this August in schools in Mexico.

    The International Taskforce for Women and ICT (ITF) will promote a dialogue about how gender principles and perspectives can be integrated in education, youth, teacher training, entrepreneurship, etc. All participants will share expertise and experience to augment and support each UN GAID Communities of Expertise's work.

Established as an alliance of NGO, private sector and United Nations organizations, BluMail seek to be viewed as an a free email portals so that it can educate and inspire when users check their email through the BluPortal.

    The workshop will review the new obligations contracted by the States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (139 signatures and 50 ratifications representing 2/3 of the world population as of April 2009) which include compulsory reasonable accommodation in education.
    It will also discuss best practices and programs in deploying accessible and assistive solutions for disabled students and the most common and inexpensive solutions available today to school administrators and educators.

    Youth Best Practices for ICTD
    Organized by: GAID Committee of eLeaders for Youth and ICT

    The eLeaders will serve on a panel along with selected best practitioners to discuss best practices in ICT for youth. The eLeaders will also discuss the state f ICT for youth in the developing world.

    ICT Millennium Village Model: Implementation and Impact
    Organized by: Infopoverty Institute and OCCAM

    The workshop will focus on the ICT Millennium Village Model, it's implementation and its impact for education, economic development, health care, and social development.

    Educating ICT Leaders Through ICT – An Innovative Approach
    Organized by: Harrisburg University

    This discussion and demo session will describe results from research in developing innovative computer aided tools for educating ICT leaders in IT planning, IT integration, IT management and entrepreneurship. In particular, we will discuss and demonstrate an intelligent IT planning, integration, security & administration environment and a knowledge portal for entrepreneurship – both integrated around a comprehensive patterns repository for industry segments. Results have shown that these tools greatly help in teaching difficult to explain concepts in difficult to teach ICT courses. Course descriptions, sample projects and texts used in university and industrial courses will be discussed and future plans in developing business simulations and games will be outlined. Participants will have an opportunity to use the tools themselves for hands-on experiments.

  • ICTs as tools for peacebuilding, crisis management and disaster recovery
    Organized by: ICT4Peace

    The panel is both a presentation and an interactive session. Presentations will cover the ICT4Peace work, ICTs as tools in disaster relief on both national and international levels. The training and education in efficient use of new ICTs in crisis management is crucial to save lives and to reestablish peace and development. Discussion will focus on how ICTs can further promote peacebuilding and disaster management and what training programmes are being developed.
